Bronzegussplakette 1906, von Heinrich Kautsch Paris. Sauer war ab 1879 Schüler von Nikolai Rubinstein am Moskauer Konservatorium. Von 1884 - 85 studierte er bei Franz Liszt in Weimar. Seit 1901 war er in Wien am Konservatorium der Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde tätig und wurde 1912 Ehrenmitglied. Er unternahm daneben ausgedehnte Konzerttouneen durch ganz Europa und in die USA.
