Flowing hair Liberty head on the right under the word LIBERTY., Denomination in letters and fractions, all within a circular chain., Graded PCGS G04, Chain, America. Misidentification by PCGS, as this example is actually a ‘Chain, Periods’. Very rare Flowing Hair Cent with periods after LIBERTY and the date! This is the scarcest major variety of all for this unique and fascinating 1793 type, with its chain symbol on the reverse, struck only one year and almost immediately discontinued as it did not illustrate to the public the value of Liberty enshrined on the obverse. Collector demand for this iconic type is enormous, both for its exceptional iconography and for what it represents as a milestone in American numismatics. We have here a widely circulated specimen, presenting a granular surface caused by environmental damages. The flan is slightly pitted, and shows visible edge blows at 1h, 2:30h, 3h, 6h and 9h, as well as a few small others on Liberty's hair, cheek and nose, and on the reverse in the right field. It is, however, a remarkably legible cent, for beyond the aforementioned flaws, Liberty's head still stands out clearly from the field, and one can even make out numerous details in the hair, eyes and nape of the neck. The word LIBERTY is particularly easy to read, and the date, although more faded, is still easy to make out. On the reverse, the chain - the most important element of this type! - and its contents are superbly preserved. The reverse legend, with the exception of the top part of the word UNITED, is still completely legible.For an affordable price for this type, which often flirts with the highest prices in the world of numismatics, it is therefore possible to treat yourself to one of the most important coins in American history, which despite its relatively poor overall state of preservation, still offers complete general legibility and retains some of the most important details such as the floating hair and the chain on the reverse!, LIBERTY. / 1793., UNITED STATES OF AMERICA / ONE CENT 1/100
