The monogram of Alexander I overstruck on the monogram of Catherine II, separating the date, within a wreath., Denomination and date stamped on the reverse of a Catherine II coin: a crowned double-headed eagle beneath a crown; holding a scepter and a globe with a cross in its talons; below, the mint mark and denomination in a scroll., Given the coin’s high degree of regularity and minimal wear, it appears to be a novodel, that is, a medal struck retrospectively, sometimes using the original dies, for collectors. The first known mintings of novodels date back to 1789, and production officially ceased in 1890. Our medal features a 10 kopek overprint made during the reign of Alexander I on a 5 kopek coin from the reign of Catherine II.
