Bust of Caracalla, laureate, draped, cuirassed, right., Securitas, draped, seated right on low seat, propping head on right hand and holding sceptre in left hand; in front, altar., Splendid specimen of a sestertius struck during the reign of Caracalla. With an extremely rare type, this specimen is even more exceptional for its state of preservation, which is rarely seen on these bronze coins, making it one of the finest specimens seen in sales and available to private collectors, if not the finest for this type. The flan was fragile when it was struck, with a crack in the flan at the level of the portrait's eyes. This portrait of Caracalla conveys power, severity and seriousness in its engraving, depicted in imperial attire with the drapery, and military uniform with his cuirass. A true masterpiece in the representation of the emperor's features, which has reached us in this superb condition. Finally, this sestertius has a delicate green patina that is particularly attractive to the eye. Ex NAC Auction 84, 2015, lot 1076., M AVREL ANTONINVS PIVS AVG GERM, SECVRITATI PERPETVAE // S C
