N within an olive wreath, date below., Denomination in two lines at center., Graded NGC MS63BN and traces of glue on the slab. This 5 centime coin from the Siege of Antwerp has a large module and is of the utmost rarity, as only 180 were minted! This coin is particularly interesting because of the extensive lamination of the flan, visible on both the obverse and reverse. It therefore illustrates the monetary practices of the early 19th century in the context of a siege. It is all the more interesting as it was only minted in 1814 during the Siege of Antwerp. This took place between January and May, and pitted the French led by Lazare Carnot against the armies of the European coalition. At the end of the siege, the city became part of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. To alleviate the shortage of small denominations, Lazare Carnot asked Josephus Franciscus Wolschot and then the Atelier de la Marine to mint 5 and 10 centime obsidional coins. Our coin is one of the finest known for this type, and the second most beautiful graded example!
