Great Britain (East Africa) 10 Cents 1940-1941 East Africa Command - Not Negotiable - Rare
During World War II, the use of token money in East Africa remains one of the least documented aspects of wartime currency. It is believed these notes were utilized in Italian Somaliland, though the specifics of their use are unclear.
In 1940, Italian forces under the Duke of Aosta defeated a small British contingent stationed in neighboring British Somaliland. This victory led to the occupation of British Somaliland by Italian forces. However, in 1941, British forces under General Archibald Wavell launched a successful campaign to liberate British Somaliland. Following their victory, Italian Somaliland was placed under British military administration until 1950, when it transitioned into a United Nations trust territory under Italian governance.
The token money in question is thought to have been employed either during the Italian occupation of 1940 or during the British campaign to reclaim the region in 1941. The design of these notes reportedly resembled the reverse side of the 100 Lire note from Italian East Africa, with some remnants of the Fascist eagle emblem occasionally slightly visible.
Some suggest that the token money might have been used in Italian prisoner-of-war camps, where British soldiers captured in 1940 were detained. The term "token money" itself is of British military origin, further indicating a connection to British forces or their administrative needs. While the exact context of their use remains uncertain, it is clear that these notes played a role either in facilitating transactions for the British or within the camp systems where they were held.
Great Britain (East Africa) 10 Cents 1940-1941 East Africa Command - Not Negotiable - Rare
