British Military Authority 1944-1945 6 Pence Used in Greece

The sixpenny note was produced in very small quantities during the final months of 1943. It was used for a limited period in Greece, from the first quarter of 1944 until May 1945. These notes circulated alongside the Series R notes issued by the British Military Authority.

British Military Authority notes were introduced into circulation in British-controlled territories in North Africa, primarily areas conquered from the Italians. The currency was needed to sustain local economies. This occupation currency was eventually used across multiple North African regions, as well as in Italy, Greece, and the Balkans. One specific region, Tripolitania, had its own unique series, Series T, with a distinct design and currency (Lire). This series circulated from 1943 until 1951. Regular issues were marked with a letter, which can be used to identify their area of use. In some regions, the Authority notes circulated for years, while in others, they were used for only a few months.
