The relationship between William III, King of the Netherlands, and Leopold I, King of the Belgians, reflected both political and diplomatic developments following the Belgian Revolution of 1830. William III's grandfather, William I, strongly opposed Belgium's secession, which made the relationship between the two nations complex. Leopold I, who became the first King of Belgium in 1831, was known for his diplomatic skills and his pursuit of stability in the region.

On October 19, 1861, William III and Leopold I met in Liège. This meeting, in a city of great symbolic value for Belgium, marked an important step in normalizing relations between the two kingdoms, based on mutual respect and pragmatic cooperation.
