The Bishopric of Dorpat was a prince-bishopric of the Holy Roman Empire located in what is now southeastern Estonia, centered around the city of Dorpat (modern Tartu). Established in 1224 following the Livonian Crusade, it was part of the broader effort by German crusaders and missionaries to Christianize the Baltic region and integrate it into Western Christendom. The bishopric was both a religious diocese and a secular principality, ruled by bishops who held both ecclesiastical authority and political power as feudal lords. It was a member of the Livonian Confederation, alongside the Livonian Order and other bishoprics. Dorpat became a center of learning, religion, and trade in medieval Livonia. The bishopric remained influential until it was conquered by Muscovite Russia in 1558 during the Livonian War, which led to the dissolution of the bishopric and the collapse of German ecclesiastical rule in the region.
