Maximian, commonly known as Maximianus Herculius, was a Roman emperor and the trusted colleague of Diocletian during the establishment of the Tetrarchy. Appointed co-emperor in 286 CE, he was responsible for defending the western provinces while Diocletian governed the east. Maximian successfully suppressed rebellions and repelled invasions, helping to restore stability to the empire after the Crisis of the Third Century. Although he abdicated alongside Diocletian in 305, he later attempted to regain power and became involved in a series of dynastic struggles before his death in 310 CE.
