Valerian was Roman emperor from 253 to 260 CE during the turbulent Crisis of the Third Century. He spent much of his reign defending the empire against invasions and internal unrest, while his son Gallienus governed the western provinces. In 260, Valerian suffered a catastrophic defeat against the Sasanian king Shapur I at the Battle of Edessa and was captured - the only Roman emperor known to have been taken prisoner by a foreign enemy. He died in captivity, and his capture became a symbol of Rome's vulnerability during one of the most difficult periods in its history.
