The Southern Song dynasty (1127–1279) was the continuation of the Song after the Jurchen Jin captured northern China and the capital Kaifeng, forcing the court south. Ruling from Hangzhou (Lin’an), the Southern Song presided over a period of remarkable economic growth, urbanization, maritime trade, and cultural achievement, despite constant military pressure along its northern borders. The dynasty relied heavily on a strong navy and river defenses, while its economy became increasingly commercialized and money-based. Although politically and militarily constrained, the Southern Song is remembered for major advances in technology, art, philosophy, and commerce, before ultimately falling to the Mongols in 1279.
