Roman Rare Bronze Palm Thimble, ca. 1st-3rd Century AD. A rare cast bronze palm thimble of broad, curved form, pierced at either side with attachment loops and featuring a recessed central groove for receiving the blunt end of a heavy sewing needle. Secured across the palm, it allowed considerable pressure to be applied when sewing thick leather and other resistant materials, and was particularly suited to the work of sailmakers and leatherworkers. The surface with a dark green patina. Ex Joel Malter Gallery, circa 1980's. H. 1 3/4" (4.5 cm)..
