The reverse of this coin is clearly dedicated to the grain supply. The great city of Rome and other cities depended on grain supplies from the provinces for food, especially by ship from Africa. For example, Ceres is the goddess of agriculture, in particular grain, while Annona mainly symbolized the annual supply of this grain. Under Emperor Nero we see the combination of Annona as an emissary of Ceres depicted for the first time, with clear symbols such as the cornucopiae, modius (grain measure) and ship′s bow.
