This medal commemorates the 800th anniversary of the founding of Moscow in 1147. The city is traditionally considered to have been established by Yuri Dolgorukiy (c. 1099–1157), a prince of the Rurikid dynasty and Grand Prince of Kiev, who first mentioned the settlement of Moscow in a chronicle entry dated 1147.
The reverse depicts the Kremlin, Moscow’s historic fortified complex and seat of Russian power, symbolizing the continuity and growth of the city from medieval principality to Soviet capital.
