Historical context:
Pierre Théodore Verhaegen (1796–1862) was a leading liberal politician and a key architect of the Belgian constitutional state. As President of the Belgian Chamber of Representatives (1848–1852), he was widely respected for defending civil liberties and secular governance. This commemorative medal was issued in 1852 as a tribute to his political integrity and personal courage. Designed by Léopold Wiener, the piece reflects both his national importance and the high regard in which he was held by his contemporaries.
