Historical context:
After the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on 28 June 1919, Belgium—previously committed to neutrality—joined the Allied occupation of the German Rhineland. This marked a turning point in Belgian foreign policy and military engagement. The obverse symbolizes armed vigilance, while the reverse allegorically celebrates Belgium's liberation from imposed neutrality, reaffirming its role among victorious nations. The medal's rich iconography and fine execution reflect postwar triumphalism and renewed national sovereignty.
