Obverse:
Left-facing laureate male bust in classical style, symbolizing patriotic heroism. In the top corners: “AOÛT” (August) and “1914”. Along the lower edge: a quote from the French playwright Pierre Corneille in raised lettering:
“Oui, ne craint point la mort, ne craint point les menaces.
J’ai le cœur au-dessus des plus fières disgrâces;
Et l’on peut me réduire à vivre sans bonheur,
Mais non pas me résoudre à vivre sans honneur.”
(“He who fears not death, fears no threats.
My heart is above the proudest misfortunes;
And though one may force me to live without joy,
One cannot make me live without honour.”)

Historical context:
This bronze plaquette was created in response to the German invasion of Belgium in August 1914, an act that triggered widespread outrage and resistance. The idealized portrait and classical inscription evoke the stoic courage and moral resolve of the Belgian people. Godefroid Devreese (1861–1941), one of Belgium’s foremost sculptors and medallists, chose to memorialize not a specific individual, but a universal embodiment of patriotic virtue. The citation from Corneille underlines Belgium’s refusal to surrender its honour, even under occupation.
