Historical context:
This World War I medal commemorates General Gérard-Mathieu Leman (1851–1920), the commanding officer who led the defence of the fortified city of Liège during the German invasion of Belgium in August 1914. Although he was eventually captured, his resistance delayed the German advance and earned him national and international respect. The medal was struck by Huguenin Frères in Le Locle, Switzerland, a leading medal manufacturer during the First World War.
