Medal of the Province of Namur for Civilian Aid and Food Relief, 1914–1919, “Collaborateur”
Obverse:
Coat of arms of the Province of Namur, crowned and surrounded by ornate scrollwork and laurel branches. In the outer band, the inscription:
"PROVINCE DE NAMUR" (top) and "COLLABORATEUR" (bottom), denoting participation in postwar relief efforts. Suspension loop at top.
Reverse:
Allegorical scene of food and humanitarian aid: a central standing female figure in classical robe holds a staff and gestures protectively over two seated women — one nursing a child, the other carrying a sheaf of wheat. Around the top edge:
"SECOURS ALIMENTAIRE" (“Food Relief”). Below:
"COMITÉ PROVINCIAL 1914–19", referring to the Namur Provincial Relief Committee during and immediately after the Liberation.
Historical context:
This bronze medal was awarded by the Province of Namur in 1944–1945 to civilian participants who aided in food distribution, logistics, and public welfare during Belgium’s recovery from Nazi occupation. The word “collaborateur” is used in its classical French sense of “collaborator” or “co-worker”, meaning those who collaborated with the provincial authorities for humanitarian purposes, not in the context of political collaboration with the occupier. Designed by F. Thirionet, the reverse composition symbolises maternal care and the restoration of civilian life through shared effort.
