Historical context:
This medal honors Pierre-Théodore Verhaegen (1796–1862), a prominent Belgian liberal politician and co-founder of the Université Libre de Bruxelles. As president of the Belgian Chamber of Representatives (1848–1852), he played a central role in defending constitutional liberties and promoting secular education. The medal was struck in 1852, the year he left the presidency, and celebrates his dedication and integrity. Designed by Léopold Wiener, one of Belgium’s most respected medallists of the 19th century, the piece exemplifies high-quality craftsmanship and liberal political symbolism in post-1830 Belgium.
