Historical context:
This medal commemorates General Gérard Leman (1851–1920), commander of the Belgian fortress city of Liège during the German invasion of August 1914. After fierce resistance, Fort Loncin — one of the city's key defences — was destroyed by a direct hit from a German siege mortar, killing hundreds. General Leman was wounded and captured but hailed as a national hero for his bravery. This medal, designed by noted Belgian sculptor Godefroid Devreese, pays tribute to his leadership and the dramatic fall of Loncin, symbolizing Belgium’s early resistance in World War I. Original case included.
