Historical context:
This medal was struck for the World’s Columbian Exposition held in Chicago in 1893 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the Americas. The Italian inscription and the imagery emphasize Columbus’s Genoese heritage. The legend “Guanahani – 12 Oct 1492” refers to the island (renamed San Salvador) where Columbus first made landfall. While most surviving examples are in bronze (see Eglit-37), this is a tin variant, struck in lower relief and likely intended for popular or more affordable distribution during the exposition.
