Historical context:
This commemorative medal was issued as a souvenir for visitors to the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York, one of the largest Christian churches in the world. Construction began in 1892, and although still unfinished, the cathedral is an iconic example of American Gothic Revival architecture. The medal likely dates to the early 20th century, when pilgrimages and religious tourism to this site became popular. The eagle standing on a book is traditionally associated with St. John the Evangelist.
