Belgium. Albert I. Gilt bronze medal 1932 – Zomergem fair award
Obverse:
Uniformed bust of King Albert I of the Belgians facing right. Along the edge: "ALBERT KONING DER BELGEN" (Albert, King of the Belgians). Below the truncation: signature "J. WITTERWULCHE".
Reverse:
Within a wreath of oak and laurel leaves, the legend:
"JAARMARKT / 1932 / ZOMERGEM"
Below in small letters: "ARTILLE".
Historical context:
This medal was awarded in 1932 at the annual fair (jaarmarkt) in Zomergem, East Flanders. Such events often included livestock competitions, produce exhibitions, and civic celebrations. The presence of Albert I’s portrait served to elevate the prestige of local agricultural traditions and symbolizes national support for rural enterprise during the interwar period.
