Historical context:
This memorial medal was issued upon the death of Pope Pius IX in 1878, the longest-reigning elected pope in history. His 32-year pontificate (1846–1878) saw the First Vatican Council and the dogma of papal infallibility. The reverse shows his funeral and theological glorification. The Latin motto is drawn from traditional Catholic funerary liturgy.
