Historical context:
This bronze medal was issued in 1974 to commemorate the establishment of diplomatic friendship between the People’s Republic of China and Japan. The medal features the pandas Ranran and Kankan, which were gifted by China to Japan in 1972 as a symbol of goodwill and became immensely popular at Ueno Zoo in Tokyo. The panda exchange marked an important act of “panda diplomacy”, strengthening bilateral relations during a period of normalization between the two countries.
