Obverse:
At center, a frontal head of an antelope flanked by a banana tree and a palm. Surrounding the scene are five compartments, each depicting symbols of science, agriculture, industry, culture, and colonial life, including traditional huts, a microscope, masks, and group rowers.
Reverse:
Congolese star above the legend:
“BELGISCH-CONGO / EN / RUANDA-URUNDI / 19–58”
Historical Context:
Issued for the 1958 Brussels Universal and International Exposition (Expo 58), this bronze medal commemorates the participation of Belgian Congo and the trust territory of Ruanda-Urundi (then under Belgian administration). The design symbolizes the economic and cultural diversity of the colonies as presented in the colonial pavilion—one of the most prominent at the exposition. The Congolese star on the reverse reflects the colonial flag and identity as portrayed at the time.
