Historical Context:
The Fabrique Nationale d’Armes de Guerre (commonly known as FN Herstal) was established in 1889 in Herstal, near Liège, Belgium. It grew into one of the world’s leading arms manufacturers, producing both military and civilian firearms. This medal was created in 1964 by the Belgian medallist Louis Dupont to commemorate the company’s 75th anniversary. The obverse shows a stylised dynamic warrior with sling, set against a spiral background evoking the rifling of a gun barrel. The reverse features the Perron, the symbol of Liège’s liberties, associating FN with the industrial and civic pride of the region. The piece exemplifies post-war Belgian medallic art, combining allegory, symbolism, and modernist stylisation.
