Historical Context:
Wilhelmina (1880–1962) became Queen of the Netherlands at the age of ten upon the death of her father King Willem III in November 1890. Until she reached the age of majority, her mother Queen Emma acted as regent. This accession medal, signed by medallist G. Haas, was struck to commemorate the beginning of her reign. The obverse emphasizes her youth, while the reverse combines the royal arms with a motto affirming the flourishing of the House of Orange. The piece is catalogued in Zwierzina (922) and in the Koninklijke Bibliotheek collection (130). It belongs to the series of 19th-century Dutch historiemedals that marked the transition between monarchs and reinforced dynastic continuity.
