Historical Context:
Henri Daniël Guyot (1753–1828) was the founder of the first Dutch institute for the deaf in Groningen, established in 1790. This medal was issued in 1840 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the institution he founded. Guyot, originally from Switzerland, introduced modern methods of deaf education to the Netherlands and became a leading figure in social and educational reform. The Latin-inspired motto “Hij plantte – Neerland kweekte” refers to his role as founder and the growth of the institute under Dutch care. The medal was engraved by Van der Kellen and is catalogued in Dirks 563 and Forrer III, 134. While bronzed examples exist, specimens in silver are particularly rare and highly sought after.
