Historical Context:
The Hortus Botanicus of Amsterdam, one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world, was founded in 1638 as a medicinal herb garden for doctors and pharmacists. The 1932 medal marked the 250th anniversary of the construction of its famous ornamental gate (1682), designed as a symbol of knowledge and progress in natural sciences.
