General Manuel Belgrano (1770–1820) was one of the foremost leaders of Argentina’s independence movement. In 1812, during the struggle against Spanish rule, he introduced the blue and white flag that would later become the national emblem of Argentina. The flag was first raised in the city of Rosario, on the banks of the Paraná River, an event regarded as the “birth” of the Argentine flag. This 1898 medal, issued by the Municipality of Rosario, commemorates both Belgrano’s pivotal role and the city’s symbolic place as the cradle of the national flag.
