This coin set from the Kingdom of Italy was issued between 1939 and 1943. It was the period during which the country was dominated by fascism and ruled by Prime Minister Benito Mussolini. The set contains a 5, 10, 20 and 50 centesimi coin as well as a 1 and 2 lire coin. The obverses feature the portrait of King Victor Emmanuel III, while the reverses show the national allegory Italia turrita, the Roman legionary eagle, and depictions of a fasces – bundles of wooden rods with an axe in the middle. This was a symbol of judicial power in ancient Rome and was later adopted by fascism.
