Gold banknote from Belize with bluestriped grunt fish
The Central Bank of Belize celebrated the 3rd anniversary of independence by issuing an exceptional set consisting of 36 gold banknotes in 1984. Strictly limited to 25,000 sets, the notes were introduced as legal tender. They are made of 22 karat gold foil and focus on the country's history as well as its breathtaking nature. The front side of this 2 Dollars banknote features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, ruins of the Mayan city of Altun Ha, a parrotfish and the national coat of arms. The back side shows bluestriped grunt fish, a jaguar, a jade head of the Mayan sun god Kinich Ahau and another portrait of the Queen. The Belize Barrier Reef is the second largest coral system in the world.
