This eye-catching banknote is part of an exceptional collection. In 1984, on the occasion of the 3rd anniversary of independence, the Central Bank of Belize issued a set of 36 banknotes made of 22 karat gold foil. Strictly limited to 25,000 sets, the notes were introduced as legal tender. The motifs focus on the country's history and nature, as well as its former head of state, Elizabeth II. The front side of this 20 Dollars note features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, ruins of the Mayan city of Altun Ha, a parrotfish and the national coat of arms. The back side depicts a peccary, a jaguar, a jade head of the Mayan sun god Kinich Ahau, and another portrait of the queen.
