This enigmatic satirical medal was struck during in multiple years during the Austrian war of succession; this example is dated 1742. While not signed by any engraver, its fabric seems to point to an origin somewhere in the Austrian Netherlands. It comments on the political predicament in which Maria Theresa found herself during these years; symbolised sophisticatedly with nudity and lederhosen! While small variations of this type are known, it is an exceptionally rare medal that rarely finds it way to market. With antique 19th century coin ticket.
Obverse: Maria Theresa trying on Lederhosen, the elector of Bavaria losing his crown and servant speaking to him - VOUS AVEZ PERDU - DIE: KONIGEN: VON: UNGERN: ZIEHT: EIN: BEIJERSCHE: HOSE: AN - MDCCXLII
Reverse: Maria Theresa standing nude between cardinal Fleury and the elector of Bavaria carrying off her clothes, speaking – J’AI GAGNE – DIE ENT BLOSTE KONINGVON UNGARN - MDCCXLII
