'Broodkaarten', litt. 'Bread cards', were used by socialist cooperatives such as Vooruit to ensure the access of labourers to good produce. They were available for purchase at their store and could subsequently be used to purchase slightly more expensive, albeit good quality bread. The cooperative, founded by Edward Anseele, was founded in 1880; the date that would be present on all these broodkaarten. They were however issued later; especially those of Dendermonde, based on the originals from Gent. Their use would eventually be halted in 1967, as they were found to be unhygienic and cumbersome. As this inscription testifies, forgery was apparently not unheard of!
