The 1000 Escudos banknote from Portugal honors an important figure in the country’s history and culture. The front of the note features a detailed portrait of Teófilo Braga, a prominent Portuguese writer, historian, and politician. Braga played a key role as the provisional president of the First Portuguese Republic and made significant contributions to the country’s intellectual and cultural life. The reverse of the banknote showcases motifs related to literature and culture, reflecting Braga’s deep commitment to the arts and republican ideals. This note, issued during the period when the Escudo was still the national currency before the introduction of the Euro, pays tribute to one of Portugal’s greatest intellectuals, whose influence helped shape modern Portuguese society and its progressive reforms. The intricate design of the banknote not only highlights the nation’s history but also emphasizes the role of culture in shaping Portugal’s national identity.
