Domenico Bigordi, known as Ghirlandaio because he was the son of a craftsman famous for his ‘garlands’ of hair, is considered one of the great protagonists of the Renaissance and of the city of Florence during the reign of Lorenzo the Magnificent. Around 1480 in particular, he became the de facto official portraitist of Florentine high society. Thanks to his precise, pleasant and rapid style, he is best known for his great cycles of frescoes, including the Histories of Saint Francis, commissioned from the artist by the Florentine banker Francesco Sassetti, who had entrusted him with the fresco of the family chapel in the church of Santa Trinita in Florence. The altarpiece above the altar, ‘The Adoration of the Shepherds’ in tempera on panel, is the worthy completion of his grandiose work.
The design of the piece is based on a detail from the Adoration of the Shepherds in the Sassetti Chapel in the Basilica of Santa Trìnita in Florence.

Edge: striated and inscribed with a 2 followed by a star, all repeated six times, alternating right sides up and down.
