In 1952, France was continuing its economic reconstruction after the heavy trials of the Second World War. The need to modernize the monetary circulation had become a priority to accompany the industrial and commercial development of the country. It was in this context that the 50 francs Guiraud coin was minted and put into circulation, durably marking the French numismatics of the 20th century.
The name of this coin came from its engraver, Jean Guiraud, who designed a visual combining republican strength and agricultural symbolism. On the obverse, there was the profile of the Republic turned to the left, wearing a majestic crown mixing ears of wheat, oak leaves and olive branches — three powerful symbols of prosperity, stability and peace. The inscription « RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE » underlined the national identity of the coin.
The reverse displayed the face value « 50 FRANCS », surmounted by the motto « LIBERTÉ ÉGALITÉ FRATERNITÉ » and framed by an olive branch on the left and an oak branch on the right, continuing the vegetal symbolism of the engraver.
