Obverse: VALERIANVS. P. F. AVG
Reverse: VIRTVS - AVGG
The reverse depicts Virtus, the personification of military valour, represented as a standing soldier facing left, holding a spear in his left hand and a Victory in his right hand. This iconography is characteristic of imperial coinage of the 3rd century, a period during which the promotion of martial virtues held a central place in official discourse.
Valerian I came to power in 253, in an Empire deeply weakened by the Crisis of the Third Century. The borders were under constant pressure: the Alamanni and the Franks threatened the Rhenish limes and the Danubian territories, while in the east, the rise of the Sassanid Empire under Shapur I represented a growing threat. Valerian associated his son Gallienus with power and devoted himself primarily to the defence of the East. The minting of this antoninianus at Trier, a workshop strategically located close to the Rhenish front and intended in particular to supply the armies, fits directly into this tense military context. The choice of Virtus on the reverse reflects the need to legitimise imperial power by asserting the emperor's military strength and determination, at a time when the stability of the Empire relied largely on the ability of the legions to contain external threats.
