The 5 Deutsche Mark banknote issued in 1960 by the Federal Republic of Germany stands as a significant testament to post-war German monetary history. It belongs to the banknote series of the German Federal Bank (Deutsche Bundesbank), which sought to anchor the visual identity of the new currency in Germanic artistic and cultural heritage.
The main face of this banknote is adorned with the portrait of a young girl, a reproduction of a work by the master of the German Renaissance Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528). This iconographic choice reflects the desire of the monetary authorities of the time to draw upon universally recognised artistic references associated with German cultural heritage. Albrecht Dürer, painter, engraver and art theorist, remains one of the most emblematic figures of Germanic art, and his work naturally found its place on Deutsche Mark banknotes.
This banknote belongs to the first complete series of the Deutsche Mark, gradually put into circulation from the 1960s onwards. The Deutsche Mark itself had been introduced as early as 1948 as part of the monetary reform that marked the economic reconstruction of West Germany. The 5 Deutsche Mark denomination represented an intermediate value in the monetary system of the time, useful for everyday transactions.
As with all Bundesbank banknotes, it incorporates various security features specific to the printing techniques of the era, including the use of specialised inks and papers designed to prevent counterfeiting.
This banknote is today a prized collector's item, bearing witness to a pivotal period in the economic and artistic history of Federal Germany.
