This 1000 escudos banknote was issued by Portugal and bears the date of 19 May 1967. It belongs to the AMD series, one of the reference series of this particular issue by the Bank of Portugal.
The banknote honours Maria II of Portugal (1819-1853), a sovereign known by the nicknames « A Boa » (the Good) and « A Educadora » (the Educator). Daughter of Peter IV of Portugal, she reigned over the Kingdom of Portugal from 1826 to 1853, following a period of political turmoil marked by the Liberal Wars between absolutist and constitutional factions. Her reign was notably associated with important reforms in the field of education and the progressive modernisation of Portuguese institutions. Her depiction on a high-denomination banknote reflects the central place she holds in Portuguese national memory.
The face value of 1000 escudos made it one of the highest denominations in circulation in Portugal at the time, the escudo being the country's official currency before its subsequent replacement by the euro. This type of high-value banknote was generally reserved for significant commercial and financial transactions.
From a numismatic perspective, banknotes from this issue are today considered collectible pieces representative of the Estado Novo period and Portuguese fiduciary production of the 1960s. The AMD series enables precise identification of each individual specimen within the overall issue, thereby facilitating the cataloguing and authentication work of collectors and specialists in antique banknotes.
