This 1000 escudos banknote was issued by Portugal on 19 May 1967. It belongs to series AIG, a reference that allows this specific example to be precisely identified and classified within its corresponding issue.
The banknote is dedicated to Maria II of Portugal (1819-1853), a sovereign who reigned over Portugal on two separate occasions during the 19th century. The daughter of Peter IV of Portugal, she was nicknamed "the Good" or "the Educator" due to her commitment to public education during her reign. Her effigy, depicted on this banknote, reflects the historical and symbolic importance the Portuguese nation attributed to her long after her reign, as this note was issued more than a century after her death.
The escudo was at that time the official currency of Portugal, in circulation until the adoption of the euro in 2002. The 1000 escudos denomination was one of the highest face values in circulation at the time, reflecting its role in high-value transactions within the Portuguese economy during the second half of the 20th century.
This type of banknote, issued under the Estado Novo, the political period that characterised Portugal at the time, illustrates the iconographic choices of the Bank of Portugal, which favoured historical monarchical figures to adorn its banknotes. The issue date of 19 May 1967 is clearly printed on the note, making it an essential identification element for collectors and numismatic experts. The AIG series further refines the dating and print run of this specific example.
