The 100 francs Cézanne banknote belongs to one of the last series of banknotes issued by the Banque de France before the transition to the euro. Issued in 1997, this banknote bears the full designation 100 Francs - Cézanne - 1998 - Series E and depicts one of the great figures of 19th-century French art, the painter Paul Cézanne (1839–1906), considered one of the forerunners of Cubism and modern art.
The obverse of the banknote features the portrait of Paul Cézanne, reproduced with the great typographic precision characteristic of Banque de France banknotes of that era. The reverse draws on the painter's pictorial universe, referencing his iconic works, including his famous representations of the Montagne Sainte-Victoire, a Provençal landscape he painted on numerous occasions, as well as evocative elements of his studio and artistic palette. The dominant colours of the banknote are warm tones, echoing the southern palette so characteristic of Cézanne's work.
The face value of this banknote is 100 francs, the official currency of France until 1 January 2002, the date of the transition to the euro as legal tender. The banknote belongs to Series E, which corresponds to a subdivision of the issue used to identify the different production batches of this type of banknote.
This banknote is representative of the French tradition of honouring its great artists and intellectuals on its currency, a practice that shaped French monetary iconography throughout the 20th century. Its graphic design, produced according to the security and printing standards of the Banque de France, makes it both a historical and artistic document, bearing witness to the monetary transition period France experienced at the dawn of the 21st century.
