The 100 francs Cézanne banknote is an issue of the Banque de France dating from 1998. It belongs to the series of French banknotes paying tribute to major figures of art and national culture. This banknote bears the letter C, which corresponds to one of the identification letters used by the Banque de France to distinguish the different series and production batches within a single issue.
The banknote is dedicated to Paul Cézanne (1839-1906), a French painter from Aix-en-Provence, considered one of the major forerunners of modern art. His work, deeply rooted in the post-impressionist tradition, had a decisive influence on the artistic movements of the 20th century, particularly Cubism. The depiction of Cézanne on this banknote reflects France's desire to honour its cultural and artistic heritage through its paper currency.
From a graphic standpoint, the banknote highlights the portrait of Paul Cézanne, accompanied by visual references directly inspired by his pictorial universe, including elements reminiscent of his famous compositions such as still lifes and landscapes of the Provençal region, including the Mont Sainte-Victoire, a recurring motif in his work. The dominant colours, typographic details and security features characteristic of French banknotes of that era are all incorporated into the design.
This 100 francs banknote represents one of the last issues of French currency before the transition to the euro, which took place on 1 January 2002 for banknotes and coins in circulation. As such, it constitutes a tangible testimony to the final period of the French national currency in the form of the franc, a currency used in France for several centuries.
