The 10 francs banknote known as "Berlioz" is a French banknote issued by the Banque de France. The example presented here bears the date of 3 July 1975 and belongs to series X.200.
This banknote pays tribute to the French composer Hector Berlioz (1803-1869), a major figure of musical Romanticism and composer of the celebrated Symphonie fantastique. His portrait occupies a central place in the graphic composition of the note, illustrating the French tradition of depicting great cultural and artistic figures on its banknotes.
The obverse of the note features the portrait of Hector Berlioz, accompanied by graphic elements evoking his musical work. The reverse depicts architectural and artistic representations related to the composer's world, including the concert hall and musical instruments, in a style typical of French banknotes of that era, characterised by fine engraving and rich chromatic tones dominated by warm hues.
This type of banknote was put into circulation between 1972 and 1979, during which time the Banque de France produced this denomination under various dates and series. Series X.200 is a precise identification element that places this example within the production chronology of this type.
The banknote features security devices characteristic of the period, including a watermark, micro-printing and intaglio elements, techniques used by the Banque de France to guarantee the authenticity of banknotes in circulation. These high-precision printing processes give the notes of this series a relief that is perceptible to the touch, particularly visible on the typographic elements and portraits.
