Billet France 1 franc 1917 UNC

This 1 franc note was issued in 1917 by the Chambre de Commerce de Marseille (Marseille Chamber of Commerce), in the particular context of the First World War. During this conflict, the shortage of metallic currency led many French chambers of commerce to issue their own necessity notes in order to compensate for the lack of currency in circulation. These local issues represented a pragmatic response to the economic constraints imposed by the wartime context.

The example presented belongs to series K-R, one of the alphabetical series used to distinguish the different issues of this note. This classification into series allowed for rigorous tracking of the notes put into circulation by the issuing institution.

The « Spécimen » (Specimen) overprint is of particular importance from a numismatic standpoint. A specimen is an example produced for reference, presentation or archival purposes, and not intended to circulate in everyday commerce. These examples are generally identified by an overprint or perforation explicitly indicating this status, which distinguishes them from ordinary notes put into circulation. They therefore present a notable documentary and collectible interest.

The Chambre de Commerce de Marseille was one of the most active institutions in the issuance of this type of necessity currency, owing to the considerable economic weight of the Mediterranean port city. These local notes generally bore symbols and references specific to the commercial and geographical identity of Marseille, thus reflecting the territorial roots of the issuer.

This type of First World War necessity note constitutes today a historical and numismatic testimony to the emergency economic mechanisms put in place in France between 1914 and 1918. Specimens, in particular, are pieces of official documentation that are rarely accessible, which grants them a singular place in collections specialising in early 20th-century French paper money.
