The 20 Pesos Patacón is a treasury bond issued by the province of Buenos Aires in 2001, in the context of the severe economic and financial crisis that struck Argentina at the end of that year. Faced with a shortage of liquidity in Argentine pesos and US dollars, several Argentine provinces resorted to issuing quasi-currencies, also known as provincial currencies or treasury bonds, in order to meet their payment obligations, particularly civil servants' salaries and current public expenditure.
This note belongs to Series A and has the distinctive feature of being overprinted, which constitutes a notable characteristic from a numismatic standpoint. Overprints on banknotes are generally applied to modify or clarify certain information appearing on the original document, whether relating to the face value, the series, or other administrative particulars.
The Patacón takes its name from an old Spanish colonial currency, the patacón, a term that originally referred to a piece of eight reales. This lexical choice establishes a symbolic link with the monetary history of the Río de la Plata region. These treasury bonds were accepted as a means of payment in the province of Buenos Aires for the settlement of provincial taxes and certain commercial transactions.
From a numismatic perspective, the Argentine quasi-currency issues of the 2001 crisis represent a truly singular monetary period in the economic history of Latin America. These documents now stand as material witnesses to an unprecedented period of monetary fragmentation in Argentina, during which no fewer than a dozen provinces issued their own parallel fiduciary instruments.
